Frances Harper was a suffragist, abolitionist, poet, teacher, public speaker, and writer. At age 20, she became one of the first Black women to be published in the United States when she published her first book of poetry. She helped those escaping enslavement make their way along the underground railroad to Canada. In 1894 she helped found the National Association of Colored Women and served as the organization's Vice President.
